Course Description

This comprehensive course includes 54 hours of classroom instruction and 21 hours of clinical training at a long term care facility. The program will introduce you to the clinical responsibilities of a Certified Nursing Assistant. Topics include: Basic nursing concepts and principle, medical terminology and documentation, legal and ethical aspects of healthcare, patient rights and dignity. This program includes taking the Massachusetts Certified Nurse Assistant exam, which is a requisite for course completion.

Prerequisites

  • Place into ENG 099/101 or above on the Workforce Development Placement Exam. This exam may be waived upon review of your college transcript.

  • Complete Medical forms with your Primary Care Provider and attain medical clearance from CastleBranch.

  • High school diploma or GED/HiSET certificate. Must be obtained by the last day of class. 

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States. 

 

Registration

STEP 1 Collect your required documents (including the placement exam scores/ college transcript, immunization form, and physical exam form). 

 

STEP 2 Submit required forms via email to AlliedHealth@rcc.mass.edu with the following subject line: "First Name, Last Name: Program Name, Semester". Please note that all required documents must be included in one single email submission. Emails with incomplete and missing forms will not be considered to move forward. *This email address is not for inquiries. Only document submissions will be reviewed. 

Example of Subject Line: "Jane Smith: Certified Nursing Assistant, Spring 2026"

 

STEP 3 Applicants who have completed all the requirements will be invited to submit the application for the program (located on the Certificate page). Your application will be "In progress" until all your medical requirements are cleared.

 

STEP 4 The status of your application will be modified upon review. You will either receive an "Approved" or "In progress" status. 

  • Approved: You may move forward to enrolling into the course section (schedule) that you prefer on the CSA 523 - Phlebotomy Technician course page

  • In progress: You must correct any errors or provide any missing information specified by the Program Manager.

  • Ceil blue scrubs

  • Comfortable, closed toe, slip safe sneakers

  • Analog watch

  • CPR Certification (must be completed before the completion of the classes).

  • CORI and SORI background check (must be completed before the completion of the classes).
